I'm really doing this--October 7, 2012
On February 1, registration for the Chicago Marathon opened at noon..and at exactly noon on February 1, I went online and coughed up $150 to reserve my spot.
This is coming from the girl who has been known to say the following on several occasions (and not very long ago, I might add):
“I will never run a marathon.”
“I have no desire to ever run a marathon.”

The past several days I have been walking past a man seated on Michigan Avenue. This man holds up a crisp, laminated sign that says in bold, typed letters, “HOMELESS”. It’s good to see that he takes his career so seriously.

A story of change
I apologize for not knowing the original source of this story, but it moved me and I want to share it here:
Once upon a time, a woman moved to a cave in the mountains to study with a guru. She wanted, she said, to learn everything there was to know. The guru supplied her with stacks of books and left her alone so she could study. Every morning, the guru returned to the cave to monitor the...

Liberating concept, no?

The champion of purses
As a resident, I for sure don’t make enough to justify how hard I work, but I still manage to buy the things that I want—for the most part. This is due to a combination of smart saving and not having to worry about paying for kids/mortgage, etc. that many of my classmates do. So as it goes, I occasionally (or maybe more often than that) like to treat myself to a new purse.
Just...
No
Sometimes “no” really means “try harder”
Every “no” brings you closer to a “yes”—so when someone says “no”, thank them
There are other times when “no” very clearly means “NO”
Many times “no” is a blessing in disguise
These were literally the first thoughts that came to mind when I woke up this...
I HAVE FIGURED OUT THE SECRET TO LIFE

Life can be quite simple if you just GET IT DONE
The best way to learn how to do something is to just do it. Likewise, the best way to get something done is to just do it. Do it. Stop thinking. Just DO IT. Go for it. Don’t think, don’t plan (okay, plan a little). Just jump in there in start.
As someone who tends to (over)analyze EVERYTHING, this is rather sound advice—for people like me. Sure, a little planning may go a...

Do people really change?
I’m sure that they can, but how often does it actually happen? Many times in my life I’ve encountered people who say that they’re “different now” when in fact within a matter of days they are back to their old habits. I’m guilty of this myself. To truly change is hard. I think that in instituting change in ourselves, we all have good intentions, and we really...

New leaves
A few months ago I started my second year of residency. This means I got to leave the scut work of intern year behind and embark on a new level of responsibility—team leadership. With that heightened level of accountability came an entirely fresh outlook on life. This outlook led to a shift in priorities which in turn led to a purging of anything that didn’t fall under the scope of...

Physicians should instill confidence and should be reassuring but should never be arrogant. A professional attitude, coupled with warmth and openness, can do much to alleviate anxiety and to encourage patients to share all aspects of their medical history.

Subjectively speaking, I’d say this is my greatest asset as a doctor, that I genuinely care about the people I treat. That’s what gives me the motivation to sometimes go out of my way to help them. Yet I often take this level of caring home with me. Is...

Really lazy Sunday?
Wow, as I’m scrolling through my dashboard I’m reading all about everyone’s super-productive “lazy” Sundays. Want to hear about mine? I just woke up an hour ago.
That’s about it.
I’ve managed to eat breakfast, twice, and now I’m at Caribou mustering up motivation to work on a lecture I’m giving tomorrow.
“Laaaaazy” Sunday. =)
